Twitter Video Downloader

Download any video from a tweet or thread as 1080p MP4, or save GIFs and images from your timeline.

Twitter is a real-time social network where content appears and disappears in your Timeline at lightning speed. Whether it’s a viral video clip from a Trending topic, a long-form Thread of tweets with embedded media, or a live audio broadcast from Spaces, you might want to keep a local copy for later reference. Our downloader extracts the original media files attached to Tweets — video, GIF, or image — and saves them in their original quality, up to 1080p for video. No login is required for public Tweets, and there’s no DRM to bypass. Here’s exactly what you can expect when downloading from Twitter.

From Trending Clips to Archived Threads: What Twitter Lets You Save

Every public Tweet can contain up to four attached images or a single video (including animated GIFs). When you paste a Tweet URL into the downloader, the tool identifies all attached media and presents them for download. Because Twitter stores all videos as H.264/AAC MP4 files, you get a compatible format that plays on virtually any device. The maximum resolution for video is 1080p (1920×1080), though some older Tweets may only offer 720p or 480p variants. Twitter compresses GIFs into MP4 (which reduces file size while preserving motion), but the platform also serves static images as JPG or PNG with no recompression — what you see on screen is what you get.

Resolution Tiers and File Types

  • Video (MP4): Typical bitrates from 500 kbps (480p) to 5 Mbps (1080p). Codec is H.264, audio is AAC at 44.1 kHz.
  • Animated GIF (MP4): Twitter replaced real GIFs with silent MP4 videos. Same H.264, but no audio track.
  • Static Images (JPG/PNG): Original resolution (up to 4096×4096 for uncropped images). Retains EXIF metadata.
  • No WebP: Twitter does not serve WebP; all images are JPG or PNG.
  • Subtitles or Captions: Twitter does not support built-in subtitle tracks in videos.

Typical file examples:
1. https://twitter.com/example/status/123456video_123456.mp4 (1080p, H.264)
2. https://twitter.com/example/status/789012img_789012.jpg (2048×1152)
3. https://twitter.com/example/status/345678gif_345678.mp4 (720p, silent)

How Retweets and Embeddings Affect Downloads

Retweets simply repost the original Tweet; our downloader follows the chain back to the source. If a user Retweets a video, we download the original video, not a duplicate. However, if a Tweet contains multiple images, only the images attached to that specific Tweet are saved — accompanying text is not included. Likes do not affect downloadability; public Tweets remain accessible regardless of Like count.

Taking Spaces Offline: Audio-Only Downloads

Twitter Spaces are live audio conversations. While Spaces are not recorded by default, some hosts enable replay. Our downloader can capture the audio stream from a Spaces replay URL (which is essentially a HLS stream). The output is a single MP3 file encoded at 64 or 128 kbps (depending on the original). Note that Spaces replays are only available if the host explicitly turned on recording, and they expire after 30 days. Also, interactive elements like emoji reactions or hand-raises are not saved.

Content That Stays Out of Reach

Despite no DRM, some Tweets are still not downloadable:
- Protected (Private) Tweets: Accounts with locked Tweets require login and authorization. Our downloader cannot access them because Twitter’s API blocks unauthenticated requests.
- Age-Gated Tweets: Tweets flagged as sensitive (e.g., adult content) are hidden behind a warning click-through. While the media URLs are still accessible, very explicit content may be blocked at the CDN level for certain regions.
- Deleted Tweets: Once a Tweet is removed by the user or Twitter, the media is no longer served.
- Tweets from Suspended Accounts: Media may be orphaned, but we cannot retrieve it.
- High-Volume API Limits: While we don’t require a login, excessively rapid downloading from many Tweets may trigger temporary rate limits from Twitter’s APIs.

Frequently Asked Questions

  • What video formats and resolutions can I download from Twitter?
Twitter videos are served as MP4 (H.264) up to 1080p. GIFs can be saved as MP4 or original GIF. Images are JPG or PNG. Our tool extracts the best available quality from the Tweet.
  • Can I download videos from Twitter Spaces or Threads?
Spaces are live audio, not video, so they cannot be downloaded. For Threads, each Tweet's video is separate; you can download them individually by pasting each Tweet link.
  • Do I need to log in to download a private Tweet's video?
Yes, private Tweets require authentication. Our tool can download videos from private accounts if you are logged into Twitter in the same browser. Protected Tweets you don't have access to cannot be downloaded.
  • Can I download Twitter videos on mobile like on desktop?
Yes, our tool works on mobile browsers and the OrbitDownloader app for Android. Simply paste the Tweet link and choose MP4 download. The process is identical to desktop.
  • Is downloading Twitter videos legal under their Terms of Service?
Twitter's ToS does not prohibit downloading public videos for personal use. However, redistributing copyrighted content or bypassing paywalls is against the rules. Use responsibly for personal archives.
  • Can I download all videos from a Twitter timeline or Trending page?
Not as a bulk action. You must paste each Tweet URL individually. Twitter lacks a playlist feature, but our list mode allows you to queue multiple links for sequential download.
  • Can I extract only the audio from a Twitter video?
Yes, our tool offers an MP3 extraction option. Twitter videos contain AAC audio; you can download the audio track separately without the video stream.
  • Why is my Twitter video link not downloading?
Check if the Tweet is deleted, private, or region-blocked. Ensure you're copying the link from the Tweet's timestamp (right-click on time) rather than the browser address bar. Also confirm the video is still available on the Timeline.

How It Works

  • 1
Copy tweet link. On desktop, click the share icon (arrow) on the tweet and select 'Copy link to Tweet'. On mobile, tap the share icon and choose 'Copy link to Tweet' from the menu.
  • 2
Paste link into OrbitDownloader. Open OrbitDownloader and paste the copied tweet URL into the input field. Ensure the URL starts with https://twitter.com/ or https://x.com/.
  • 3
Select file format and quality. Choose from available formats: MP4 for video up to 1080p (H.264 codec), GIF for animations, or JPG/PNG for images. Not all tweets offer every option.
  • 4
Initiate download. Click the download button. The tool will parse the tweet and fetch the media from Twitter's CDN. A progress bar shows the status.
  • 5
Save to local storage. Once processed, the file appears in your browser's default download folder. Rename or move it as needed. No login required for public tweets.

Troubleshooting

  • When downloading a video from a Retweet, the tool grabs the retweeter's empty shell instead of the original video content.
Open the original Tweet (e.g., click the timestamp on the retweet) and copy its URL. Most downloaders only parse the video from the native tweet embedding.
  • Native GIFs on Twitter are actually MP4 videos with no audio track; saving as .gif may result in a static or broken file.
Download the MP4 version directly. If you need a true GIF, convert the MP4 to GIF using a local tool like ffmpeg: `ffmpeg -i file.mp4 file.gif`.
  • Tweets in a long Thread can contain multiple videos, but the downloader might only capture the first one or miss inline videos.
Use browser developer tools (Network tab) to locate each video's direct URL, or parse the thread page's JSON to extract all `media` entities.
  • Videos from Twitter Spaces are live audio streams only, not downloadable as an MP4 video file.
Spaces do not host a video track; use a dedicated Space recording tool or capture the audio stream (AAC) via browser dev tools. There is no video download.
