Twitter Video Downloader

Download any video from a Tweet or Thread as 1080p MP4, or save GIFs from your Timeline.

Why people download Twitter content

Twitter, now rebranded as X, serves as a real-time information hub where breaking news, viral clips, and live commentary converge. Users often want to save Tweets containing videos or images for offline viewing, archival, or sharing outside the platform. For instance, a viral video from a Trending topic might disappear when the original account is deleted or made private. Others download their own Tweet media to repurpose across other social networks without losing quality. The Timeline moves fast; downloading lets you preserve a snapshot of a memorable Thread or a key moment from a Live Space. Because X does not offer a native save button for every video or GIF, a dedicated downloader fills the gap.

What you can save with this Twitter downloader

This tool extracts media directly from Tweet URLs. You can save:

  • Videos (MP4, up to 1080p) – including those embedded in Tweets, native recordings, or videos from X’s built-in camera.
  • Images (JPG, PNG) – individual photos or multi-image Tweets.
  • GIFs (GIF) – animated GIFs shared on the platform.

Here are concrete examples of what you can grab:

  1. A Tweet with a 1080p video from a verified news account – download as MP4.
  2. A multi-photo Tweet containing four images – save each as JPG or PNG.
  3. A Retweeted GIF from a popular meme account – download as GIF.
  4. A video from a Tweet in your Timeline, even if the account sets media as sensitive (age-restricted content requires login).

A note on quality and formats

The tool preserves the original resolution up to 1080p. Twitter compresses videos: typical bitrates range from 2–8 Mbps depending on the source. Images are served as progressive JPEGs or PNGs. Our downloader fetches the highest quality version available. For videos, you’ll get the .mp4 container with H.264 codec – no transcoding, no re-encoding. For images, we retain EXIF metadata where present. GIFs are downloaded as-is, though Twitter may convert short videos to GIF loops.

Limits, restrictions, and what it can NOT do

While this tool handles most public content, you should understand its boundaries:

  • Login-gated content: Only public Tweets are accessible. If a Tweet is from a protected account (requires follow approval), the downloader cannot fetch it. You must log into X to see that media, but our tool doesn’t support authentication.
  • Age-restricted media: Tweets marked as sensitive content (e.g., nudity, violence) may be blocked unless you are logged into X and have opted in. The downloader will return an error for these unless the media is publicly accessible without account.
  • Geo-blocking: Some videos are restricted to certain regions (e.g., sports clips, news footage). If the Twitter API or CDN rejects your IP, the download will fail. Using a VPN may help, but that’s beyond our scope.
  • Spaces recordings: Live X Spaces are audio-only streams; they are not downloadable via this tool because they are not served as video files.
  • Threads with mixed media: If a Thread contains quoted Tweets with their own media, you must provide each Tweet’s URL individually. We do not recursively download entire Threads.
  • Rate limits: To prevent abuse, the tool enforces a per-IP rate limit of 10 downloads per minute. Exceeding this will temporarily block your requests.

What it absolutely cannot do: Download content from DMs, private Tweets, or any media protected by DRM (Twitter has no DRM, but restrictions above apply). It cannot extract audio from videos separately, nor convert formats (e.g., MP4 to MOV). It will not work on Twitter Spaces recordings or any live-stream event.

Use this tool for public, non-restricted content only. Always respect copyright and the terms of service of X.

Frequently Asked Questions

  • What video formats can I download from Twitter?
Twitter serves videos in MP4 format, up to 1080p. Our tool extracts the original MP4 without re-encoding, preserving quality from your Timeline or Explore feed. GIFs and static images (JPG, PNG) are also downloadable.
  • Can I download videos from Twitter Spaces recordings?
If the Space host enabled recording, the replay is available as a video tweet. You can download that MP4 using the same method as any other tweet video. Live Spaces are not downloadable.
  • Do I need to log in to download a Twitter video?
No, our downloader works with public tweets and X posts. However, if the tweet is from a protected account, you must be logged in to access the URL. We do not bypass login or authentication.
  • Does the downloader work on Twitter's mobile website?
Yes, it works with links from mobile and desktop versions. Copy the tweet URL from your mobile browser or the X app (via share) and paste it into our tool. The downloaded file is identical up to 1080p.
  • Is downloading Twitter videos allowed under X's terms?
Twitter's terms permit downloading videos for personal use, but redistributing or reuploading may violate copyright. We do not store videos; you download directly from Twitter's CDN. Respect creators' rights and platform rules.
  • Can I download all videos from a Twitter thread?
Our tool processes one tweet URL at a time. For a thread, open each tweet individually and copy its link. Bulk download for entire threads or Timeline is not supported due to API limitations.
  • Can I extract audio from a Twitter video?
Yes, after downloading the MP4 video, use our audio extraction to convert to MP3. This works for any video tweet from your Timeline, including those from Trending topics.
  • Why is my Twitter download link not working?
Ensure the tweet is public and not deleted. Twitter occasionally changes CDN paths; our tool updates automatically. If the video is from a protected account or an expired Spaces replay, it won't download. Try a different tweet.

How It Works

  • 1
Copy tweet link. On the Twitter mobile app or web, tap the share icon on a Post (e.g., from your Timeline or Explore) and select 'Copy link' to get the tweet URL. On desktop, click the share icon or the three-dot menu and choose 'Copy link to Tweet'.
  • 2
Paste URL into OrbitDownloader. Open OrbitDownloader in your browser or app. Paste the copied tweet URL into the input field. The tool will parse the Post and identify available media files (video, image, GIF) included in that tweet.
  • 3
Select format and quality. For videos, choose between MP4 or optimized formats; pick resolution up to 1080p. For images, select JPG or PNG. For animated GIFs, choose GIF format. Note that some Spaces recordings may not be downloadable due to live content restrictions.
  • 4
Initiate download. Click the download button. OrbitDownloader will fetch the media from Twitter’s CDN and save the file to your device. The tweet's embedded media (e.g., a Retweet’s video) is handled automatically; no login required for public content.

Troubleshooting

  • When downloading video from a Tweet with multiple images and videos, only the first media element is captured.
Inspect the tweet's `extended_entities` to retrieve all media objects, then select the desired media by its `media_url_https` or index, ensuring the downloader iterates over the full array.
  • GIFs from Twitter are saved as static images instead of animated mp4 files.
Use the video URL from the `video_info` variants where `content_type` is 'video/mp4' and `bitrate` is highest, even for tweets typed as 'animated_gif'.
  • Videos in a Thread are missed when only the first Tweet URL is provided.
Fetch the conversation thread via the `conversation_id` API parameter, then parse each tweet's `video_info` to collect all video URLs sequentially.
  • Downloading a recorded Space results in a low-bitrate audio-only stream.
Spaces are live audio; recordings are served as HLS manifests (`m3u8`). Use a tool like `ffmpeg` to download and convert the highest quality `.ts` segments to MP4.

Respect Twitter's Terms of Service: only download content you own or have explicit permission to use. Unauthorized downloading may violate copyright and Twitter's rules.
